Down the hatch! “Welcoming cups” in the Grünes Gewölbe
As a gesture of welcome, distinguished guests at the Dresden court were invited to drink from distinctive silver vessels known as ‘Willkomm’. The often whimsical shapes of these exclusive Renaissance and Baroque goldsmith’s works allude to the places where they were used. For instance, at the Saxon Hoflößnitz vineyard, wine was drunk from vessels shaped like vintners, whilst in hunting lodges such as Moritzburg, guests drank from ingeniously crafted deer-shaped vessels. A spectacular collection formed part of the giant barrel on the Königstein, which was celebrated as an attraction at the time, and highlighted the fortress‘s defensive capabilities and its points of interest.

Weitere Willkommgefäße
Further ‘Willkomm’ vessels made of glass, porcelain and stone demonstrate the diversity of this kind of object. Furthermore, the exhibition explores the questions of when, where and how drinking took place at the Saxon court. In doing so, it provides insights into the extravagant drinking customs of an era in which excessive drinking was quite common. In order to immortalise themselves, the illustrious guests could sign so-called guest books, not without occasionally contributing humorous toasts.
The presentation features objects from the Rüstkammer, the Kunstgewerbemuseum, the Porzellansammlung, the Kupferstich-Kabinett, the Münzkabinett and the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, as well as external loans from the Stiftung Hoflößnitz, Radebeul and the Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek and from a private collection.
